I am certain that I am not the only one here, who is crazy about Porsches. The 911 has been a success story throughout most of its history, capturing our imagination, to the point where most of us think "911" as soon as we hear "Porsche" mentioned in any conversation.
It got me thinking about the best models that Porsche has built, that did not carry the 911 badge.
Here is a list of my top 5, let me know how would you rank them, and what other models would you add.
Porsche 986 Boxster 3.2l Manual
Bang for buck, only a standard 944 can compete with this great & undervalued (atm) car.
Great handling, just enough power for everyday use & easy access to parts and specialists make this a tempting alternative to other roadsters. They are at the bottom of the depreciation curve, with still plenty good ones out there. Don't waste your time on a 2.5 or a 2.7.
3.2 Manual is the only way to go.
Porsche 924 2.5
Probably the cheapest way to own a Porsche, with reliable engines, light body & pop up headlamps, think of it as a MX-5 competitor, with bucketloads of 1970's chic & ridiculously low maintenance costs (a lot of VW parts & a standard 4 cylinder layout)
Porsche 914/6
Would probably be the top of my list few years ago, but with the soaring prices, it is now competing in my head against many other classic sports cars. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful peace of design, just look at it!
Porsche 968 CS
1320 kg, 0-60 in 6.3s, timeless design & an investment that will probably pay you better dividends than your saving account.
Porsche 944 S2
My personal favourite atm. 211 HP, 3l engine and smooth design. It is modern enough to be driven daily, but still unmistakably 80s, the S2 turns heads wherever it goes. It is fast enough for road use & occasional track day use if needed. Highly recommended!
By now, you are probably thinking, what about the Cayman, Boxster Spyder, 928, 356, 912 and many more. Well, that's where you come in, share your suggestions below.

Also 365 and 550 Spyder

Carrera GT, 959, and 918 are the only Porsches for me. Mainly the GT.

I feel like they haven't made much more than 10 cars that weren't a 911. I'd take a Cayman over a Boxster, though. I'm far from an anti-convertible purist, but something about the Boxster's top just looks un-Porsche to me.

My first thought was ...are there even 10 other Porsches? Of course there are. May I add the bonkers 911 GT1 road car, or does that count as a 911?

928
make a new one already!

It's still called a 911, so yeah.

I will probably have to put my flame suit after stating this, but personally, the Cayman has been a bit of a dissapointmetn.
It is a great car, no doubt, but Porsche made sure it is just not as good as the 911. I don't mind that difference on the Boxster, because putting the roof down makes for a more engaging drive.
Whenever I was driving a Cayman though, I failed to see why anyone picks it over the previous gen 911, which is usually available at the same price point, and always felt like the better car.

I haven't driven a Cayman. I'm sure it's a great car. But it's always screamed to me, "I can't afford a proper 911." Even though it's arguably better for track use.

I just wanted to correct you on one small thing, the 924 2.5 is called the 924S. It's buggin Porsche Tamer. (o_O)

Isn't that the only purpose of the Cayman? "I can't afford a 911"
![]() 01/16/2015 at 14:56 |

It's smaller and more nimble, which is an advantage - one of the few, as, like the Camaro, they won't put their fastest engines in the smaller cars to keep them from performing better than the flagship model. (Current Z28 being a possible exception...)

OCD alert! But a fair point indeed.
I have initially put 924 as an entry, as I actually really like the basic 2l here in Europe, but then remembered the ridiculous 90hp in US, so I added the 2.5l.

"103. Cayenne"
Oh, how I hated this car! My work involves driving a lot of different metal around, and I dreaded the moment I would come across my first Cayenne.
Then the day came, and I wanted to hate the car so much, but I couldn't! I still see SUVs as pointless, and would never buy a Cayenne to keep, but they are actually very solid cars & handle surprisingly well for their size/height. I had a Cayenne Turbo S for a couple of weeks though, and that thing is completely mental.

Yeah, I don't think I could last with the 90hp without going insane, not that it's a bad motor or car in general, but people think it's weird when I say my '84 944 has 150hp, they expect at least 200 or so, apparently because it's a straight 6, at least that's what they say it sounds like. :p

The Cayman. And don't worry about "but its a line below the 911!" Thats what upgrades are for.
And I too feel they haven't made anything other than 911's and the Cayman recently. Have they still made 944's in 2014?
![]() 01/16/2015 at 22:15 |

I agree that the 944s sound great. The 2.0 924 sound more like a standard 4 cylinder does, but in the domestic form they had 125HP, making them surprisingly capable in everyday traffic.

It's a very fun capable driver, especially for me in the spring and summer, when it'll be a daily driver.

In spite of having had the chance to ride shotgun in a Cayenne Turbo as it schooled a Mustang covered in speed shop stickers on a stoplight to stoplight run, the ranking stands. The best of that engagement was the look on the Mustang driver's face as my friend asked if he'd ever been beaten by an SUV then lowered the adaptive ride height to it's minimum.
